The Northern Women’s Forum is hosting the 9th Annual Chili Blanket Event, Saturday, Dec. 10, from noon–2 p.m. at the Prince George Courthouse, serving up hot chili, hot chocolate, cool music, sharp talk. Take the opportunity if you are in Prince George to join this rally against the prison of poverty in BC. The cost of poverty far outweighs the savings of denying our basic rights. Poverty leads to poor health, problems in school, more crime, and greater stress on families; costs British Columbians $8.1-9.2 billion each year. A poverty reduction plan in BC would cost $3-4 billion/year while generating $5.3 billion in additional income. BC is still the province with the highest level of child poverty – for 8 years now. Canadian women working full time, full year jobs still make only 73 per cent of the male wage. In 2008 the poverty related cost of crime was $745 million.
Is it just me or is everything costing more this year than last year?
