Taking in recycling used to cost a lot less

For 20 years we recycled, composted and kept garbage to a minimum.

For 20 years we recycled, composted and kept garbage to a minimum. It cost us about one truckload to Bings once a year; maybe $15. We dropped off all our recycling, while we were already in town, in the correct containers conveniently located in a couple of lots throughout the Valley.

Now, we have to still make the trip to Bing’s, plus a trip to Recycle It for glass, refundable containers, a trip to Coast Recycling for metal, somewhere else for electronics, not sure where for clean plastic bags, plus we now pay $130 a year for the questionable privilege of having a few things picked up in garbage, and even less things in recycling.

Whoever thought the idea of home pick-up for rural areas was smarter and would cost taxpayers less? Who also chose the new company, which is now threatening to charge more and penalize for recycling less? They should be held responsible and fined their last five years of overpaid salary.

I know I don’t have the full story, but maybe whoever made these decisions didn’t either?
