This year, due to the mail strike and my health problems, I was unable to make my property tax payment until July 5, 2011. As I qualify for the Homeowners Grant and Seniors Credit I paid $100 in property taxes, however I was required to a penalty which was calculated on the gross amount of taxes which worked out to $89.
The late fee is 10 per cent of the full amount owing and I feel this is totally unreasonable. How can they charge a penalty on the gross amount when I actually owed only $100?
I am also most disturbed this money is not kept in the community but is paid to the provincial government.
