It is absolutely absurd to allow taxpayers to vote on a tax issue such as the HST.
In our parliamentary system the government is elected to decide how to raise sufficient taxes to cover the costs of providing services for residents.
The state of California and many other states allow taxpayers to vote on tax bills. Thus the people of California voted no on a tax package for schools and education.
The end result was the state of California had to cut $51 billion from the schools and education department. Yes, that was a $51 billion cut, because they let the taxpayer decide if they wanted to support the education department.
I can just imagine the implications in British Columbia if the HST is abandoned.
