To the editor:
I am appalled with the legislation preventing licensed carpenters in this province from obtaining a building permit to construct a home. B.C. is the only province in Canada that refuses to issue a building permit to a licensed carpenter.
Could Rich Coleman please explain why he has taken away our right to build our own homes.
I can only surmise the Liberal Government of B.C. feels that carpenters are inferior to other licensed trades and therefore they must pay $425.00 to prove they have learned their trade, and then only be allowed to build one home every five years.
If your government wishes to take away the taxpayers right to build their own home, at least please consider an exemption to this legislation for all the licensed carpenters in our province.
This legislation has nothing to do with protection of the public. These days all building plans must be engineered, then the plans are checked by the local powers that be, foundations must be surveyed, and construction is checked at various stages by the local building inspectors.
This legislation also prevents the building inspector from building his own home.
