Boys, boys, boys – please if you can’t play nice, perhaps you shouldn’t play at all.
In the playground of provincial politics this week, three toddlers just can’t seem to get along – or grasp the bigger picture.
NDP leadership candidate Harry Lali threatened legal action this week over what he claims to be “contaminated” mass sign-up of party members by opponent Adrian Dix.
Lali claims Dix’s workers dropped off stacks of new memberships before the deadline Monday without the necessary fees attached to each application. The money was brought in separately in “bags and envelopes and in little handbags,” Lali said.
Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth’s campaign also lodged a complaint about membership sales.
The NDP is holding a vote on April 17 to elect a new leader to replace Carole James.
Only people who have been party members for 90 days can vote – hence the “No fair,” playground theatrics.
Wednesday, the B.C. NDP executive rejected the complaint from rival candidates stating the party will “process” all the memberships and donations received in person at the provincial office in Burnaby by the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday.
Well duh!
Again, it’s a case of “me, me me,” instead of what’s good for the party – and this province. Surely the candidates can set aside their foot-stomping for a minute to see the sign-up is great news for the party and its membership base.
Which is precisely what they need – support.
One would think the flood of British Columbians committing to the party and its policies would be reason to celebrate, not squabble.
And to request those memberships be thrown out? My goodness boys – you’re on the same team.
It’s this kind of childish behaviour that undermines politics, politicians and the political process.
These three should be sentenced to a time-out – for their own sake.
