To the Editor,
Even after the final technical report on the Colliery dam, the Harewood’s Chase River flood plain is still inundated with more than 70 tsunami warning signs. Several weeks have passed since Golder Associates’ report stated unequivocally that the Colliery dams are safe from earthquakes, so why are they still up? Is the majority of city council wanting to keep the signs up to punish the people who live in that area for questioning the city’s authority and desire to waste millions of tax dollars? Is it because they want those people to live in fear or does the majority of the council just want to lower the property values in that area? I hope this is not the case, but it is out of only safety concerns for those who live there.
If they are being left up purely for safety reasons, why then is not the rest of Nanaimo treated the same?
We all know that the Colliery dam is not the largest body of water in Nanaimo. We all know also the risks of flooding from these other large bodies of water in Nanaimo are at least as great if not greater than with the Colliery dam.
