I wonder how many people are aware of the pitfalls of signing onto the TPP. We are signing away our sovereignty.
It allows corporations from 11 different countries to sue Canada whenever our government passes a law that hurts their profits. It allows these disputes to be settled in secret courts. It mandates that Canada pay huge sums of cash to corporations that win these disputes.
If you think that’s ridiculous, you’re right. It is called “Investor-State Dispute Settlement,” and under similar provisions in NAFTA, Canadian taxpayers have paid out millions to foreign companies.
I stopped supporting the Conservatives when Stephen Harper signed a similar deal with China. As these are in secret courts, we may never know if we have been sued, or for how much.
It is amazing how quiet the media has been on this subject. The only people making us aware of this is the Green Party.
