Tree bylaw has done well by Duncan
Dear mayor and council:
I sure congratulate Duncan council after observing the green effects of our progressive, preservation-minded tree bylaw following several years of it being in force.
I am proud our city took the proactive, sensible step in passing this logical urban-smart bylaw to protect trees on public and private property.
Those saved trees mean property-value preservation, climate-change filtering, habitat, and character retention of our streetscapes.
I only wish North Cowichan council would follow Duncan’s clever lead in enacting a tree bylaw, with teeth, to preserve its threatened urban lands.
I also urge council to takes steps to nudge the province to amend the Local Government Act to allow regional districts, such as Cowichan’s, to allow tree-preservation bylaws in local areas.
Tree bylaws also support any city’s pedestrian atmosphere. Ergo, I urge city council to review its prescient Plan Of Action 2000 and take steps to make Duncan far more pedestrian friendly — for locals and tourists alike — by undertaking more low-cost installation of bulbs, banners, benches, bushes and buskers; to wit, ‘The 5 B’s.’
Thank-you Mayor Staples and council for listening and your kind consideration.
I would also welcome any chance for residents to brainstorm such ideas with council.
