To the Editor,
Compassion Farm of Lantzville is becoming famous across Canada as an example of good, safe, clean food production.
Dirk Becker and Nicole Shaw took a bare, gravelly lot and turned it into a Garden of Eden, producing nutritious food to a standard higher than required for organic certification.
Sounds like a win-win situation for Lantzville. Good local food and an eyesore transformed into a beautiful garden.
I am the agriculture critic for the Green Party of Canada and I get a lot of questions about organic farming and local food. I am always happy to share what I have learned.
Recently, a Lantzville resident – Mayor Colin Haime – asked me some random questions about raw manure and organics. I was later surprised to see my name and answers on his blog, but taken out of context.
I find it odd that anyone would try to use my comments about how to use raw manure safely against a gardener who doesn’t apply raw manure to his plants.
I called the District of Lantzville to find out why my comments were used out of context, but I have received no call back. Then, within minutes I was blocked from reading the website.
I had to laugh. Never before have I seen gardening considered as a threat.
I am proud of local entrepreneurs like Becker and Shaw. Urban farming is the wave of the future and it will be wonderful when Lantzville joins the celebration of healthy, local organic food.
