The article on the Cordova Bay Community Club contains a number of questionable or misleading statements by the club president Ron Jordan, regarding the proposed expansion of the badminton club facility.
Jordan has failed to provide concrete numbers regarding users of the current building so that others can gauge the accuracy of his assertions concerning the local community’s use of the facility. Assuming that his figure of “500 unique visitors” per month is correct and that his prediction that “the number [of visitors will] grow exponentially with a new facility and added programming through rentals” is accurate, readers of the Saanich News will understand why the residents of Sutcliffe Avenue and the surrounding neighbourhood oppose the development.
Neither Sutcliffe Avenue nor Cordova Bay Road can handle the increased level of traffic generated by the CBCC building. Consequently, the proposed facility threatens the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers within our community. The president of the CBCC apparently wants to dismiss objections to his proposals as simply noise from a disgruntled group of naysayers.
We can assure both him and your readers that many people in the neighbourhood oppose the expansion of the badminton club for sound reasons, which include road safety and the inappropriate size of the development given the residential character of Cordova Bay. Badminton players from elsewhere may benefit from the new facility, but they will do so at a significant cost to the well-being of local residents.
