Victoria Report – Remembering Them

MLA Jackie Tegart's bi-monthly column on what's happing in Fraser-Nicola.

Tuesday, on the 11th day, at the 11th hour, the nation was silent for one minute. Silent to reflect on of the sacrifice made by thousands of Canadians in battle for freedom and peace.

We are incredibly fortunate to live in a nation as prosperous and free as the one we love today. It is hard to imagine the conditions they had to live through in both world wars, however they persevered, and they won.

Canadians are tremendously proud of the service people in the military who go to work every day on-duty for our nation at home and abroad. We especially saw this outpouring of support just last month when we were shocked to see the tragic deaths of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

We cannot take our rights and granted, and we owe them and everyone who has served past, present and future such a debt of gratitude for their work.

This year marks the significant anniversary of the 100 since the start of the First World War, and the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War. It is important that we pass the lessons of Canada’s involvement in these wars and conflict since to promote peace and prosperity against opposing forces.

The Royal Canadian Legion in B.C. has been one of the most important organizations that helps educate youth understand the sacrifices and the experiences that our soldiers made in both world wars and in conflicts since.

And while the poppy campaign is winding down, the support of millions of Canadians will help support their good work in advocating for veterans, affordable housing support and mental health programs, among many more services.

So join me in thanking our veterans and our current military service personnel for their service to our country.
