Editor: Despite the protests of our Conservative MP Mark Warawa, church members, union members and many friends, Langley resident José Figueroa is facing deportation to El Salvador.
He would be leaving behind a wife and three children born in Canada.
It’s difficult to take pride in our country when I see our federal government taking action against such a model citizen, a long-time contributor to our community and a supportive father and husband.
I applaud the Walnut Grove Lutheran Church for offering him sanctuary after learning that Immigration Canada wants him deported back to El Salvador and the Canadian Border Services Agency has issued an arrest warrant. José poses no risk to the security of our country.
How can our federal government take this action based on Jose’s past affiliation with the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), which is now the democratically-elected government of El Salvador?
As MP Warawa pointed out, the FMLN is not on any terrorist list in Canada and there is an El Salvador embassy in Ottawa.
We will continue to advocate for José.
