Re: Area E and the Aquatic Centre
I am a resident of Area E and I will be happy to pay a little more in taxes to maintain the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.
It seems to me that we are losing the spirit of generosity and compassion that has been the Canadian way of life through the nearly 75 years I have been here. Lately there is more and more expression of self-interest — people are saying, if it doesn’t benefit me directly I don’t want it.
We need to go back to the times where we all thought more broadly about society as a whole and not just ourselves. Because we feel that food production is important we have created a system of lower taxes for active farmers. The rest of us pay more to compensate. We all pay school taxes even though we might not have children. In Area E we pay taxes for the library, transit system, parks and trails, Kinsol Trestle, community centres, hockey arenas and a range of other community projects whether we use them or not. It is called being part of a community and contributing to the good of all our citizens.
The Cowichan Aquatic Centre is no different. We need to support it for the common good.
