Re: “Teens hit in crosswalk.”
I lived one block from there for seven years (just moved) and there is far more to this story of a 13-year old male crossing 64 Avenue at 132 Street at a marked crosswalk.
Not only is there a crosswalk there, is also a pedestrian walk/don’t walk light.
Why there is a pedestrian light, I don’t know. Few obey it, particularly the students crossing the street to Ecole Panorama Ridge Secondary. They not only ignore the pedestrian light, they ignore the red/green light for vehicle traffic and walk on the red or jaywalk a few metres from the corner. They also ignore the one to cross 132 Street at 64 Avenue. Enforcement by anyone? I’ve never seen it.
There is also a greenway walk on the north side of 64 Avenue, where a hoard of students jaywalk before and after school, ignoring the light-controlled intersections at 64/132 and 134/64.
Why more students are not injured is probably because they are young, agile teens and running between cars in the middle of the street seems to be second nature. And why wouldn’t they? Surrey has to be the jaywalking capital of Canada. Of course like most everything else in Surrey, there’s no enforcement, so why follow the rules?
This applies to vehicular traffic too. Down at my old corner, 65B Avenue, there is a marked crosswalk on 132 Street for two elementary schools and it is also used by secondary students and many seniors using the bus. Just sit in your car there and watch car, after car, after car, ignore those trying to use this crosswalk – mothers pushing baby strollers/carriages, students, etc.
Why even bother with crosswalks? Let everyone do whatever they want, it is Surrey and no one gives a damn about enforcement or rules. We’d save a lot of money and paint.
