Yahktivists take yak by the horns

To the Editor:

On behalf of Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society, we would like to thank you for coming out to the Winterfest and also for your support in articles about our events out here in the burbs of the Creston Valley. The Winterfest pictures you posted were excellent! You capture the essence of what we do and show our pride of the community of Yahk and our accomplishments.

As many people know, you cannot make events like ours happen without an army of volunteers, supporters, and sponsors. We are very fortunate to have such a great bunch that create our successes.

In reference to this year’s Winterfest, despite the weather we did have a good turnout. Imagine if the weather co-operated!

There was, however, a concern as some people came to the Winterfest expecting to see a fire walking demonstration. This was not a Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society or Winterfest committee event. It was a private individual that was putting this on in the same timeframe as the Winterfest but different location in Yahk. It was unfortunate that some folks came and were made aware of this fact and, moreover, found out it was postponed until a further date. We had asked the firewalker to take down and repost his flyer with clear event information and he did oblige our request. So a lesson was learned in communication.

Speaking of communication, maybe there could be an added feature in the new branding exercise that is currently being done for the Creston Valley by embracing the small rural communities as one of the strengths. Just a thought since the objective is to strengthen and improve Creston Valley’s brand and story. We have many stories to tell! Yahktivism is strong. We take the yak by the horns! OK, I will stop, for now.

Stay tuned for Yahk’s Breast Fest on April 14.
