2019 B.C. Men’s and Women’s Championships: Quesnel’s Team Waffle out in Draw 8

Team Joanisse defeated 2018 World Junior Champions Team Tardi 8-7

Quesnel’s Team Waffle is out of the BC Men’s Championships after a tough game against Team Geall, last year’s winners, in Draw 8.

Team Waffle lost 3-9, but the game was neck and neck until the sixth end.

The team received a standing ovation from some of the crowd as they walked off the ice at the West Fraser Arena for the final time of the tournament. “It’s been awesome,” said Skip Brady Waffle. He said he took a picture with Team Geall who went to the Brier last year, at the end of the game.

“It’s really been something [playing at home],” added Third Eric Eriksson. “The cheers are something none of us are used to. It’s been a real big treat.”

Dave Vatamaniuk, the team’s lead, also thought the community (and the curling rink) gave the team “great support” throughout the tournament.

As for their performance, Second Mike Pagurut said he thought the team improved as the tournament progressed.

Waffle added that in the team’s last two games, they did well until the fifth end break. “We don’t like the fifth end break,” he joked.

Draw 8 was all men’s teams, and saw a win from Team Joanisse over 2018 World Junior Champions Team Tardi 8-7 in a game that came down to the tenth end.

Team Horning faced a difficult defeat with a loss 4-7 against Team Eden, and Team Wenzek won 9-3 over Team Klymchuk.

Team Montgomery won 8-3 against Team Blandford.

The women’s championships will continue tonight in Draw 9 at 7 p.m.
