The Ladysmith 49ers Senior Boys Basketball team took first place at the Cowichan Welcome Back Tournament last weekend.

The 49ers won all three of their tournament games, defeating Brookswood Secondary 77 – 68, Cowichan Secondary 72 – 49, and Nanaimo District Secondary School 82 – 66.

“The boys were unreal. They played probably the best games I’ve seen them play. They worked hard. It was a great start to the season,” head coach Daryl Rodgers said.

This year’s 49ers senior squad is comprised of 14 players, six of which are Grade 12 students. The 49ers moved up to play in the Triple A league. The only Triple A team they played at the Welcome Back tournament was Brookswood Secondary. Brookswood was listed as an honourable mention for the top 10 Triple A teams in B.C.

“That was a big win to beat them. So, there’s a possibility we may get into the top 15 now,” Rodgers said.

Both Cowichan Secondary and NDSS are Quad A teams. The 49ers won’t see either team during regular season play.
