A 10 year-old from Burlington, Ontario has become the second person in his family to swim all the way across Lake Windermere at its widest point.

But Ethan Eivinsen’s first cross-lake swim didn’t go quite as he hoped.

“I wanted to beat my sister,” said Eivinsen, whose family has a summer condo in the area.

“But I was 10 minutes slower, with the time of one hour and a half.”

Eivinsen’s sister Mackenzie, who was 11 when she swam across Lake Windermere in 2009, was the first member of her family to make an attempt on the lake. Her prize: a Lululemon sweater from her mom.

Eivinsen followed the same route she took, starting his trek directly across from Terravista and making the crossing with a mix of breaststroke and freestyle swimming. He remembers the journey as being “tiring.”

“It’s a lot more tiring,” he said. “There’s currents, I don’t know, it’s just tiring.”

But, he added, if he had another opportunity to beat his sister’s record, he might consider making another attempt.

When asked about his training regime for the crossing, Eivinsen said he doesn’t swim that often when he’s in Ontario.

“Not really. I swim competitively, but it’s only five times a week.”
