Fernie Alpine Ski Team hosted the B.C. provincial TECK zone ski cross and slalom races on Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12.
Saturday saw the first official BC Alpine sanctioned ski-cross race at Fernie Alpine Resort (FAR).
Together with FAR, Rod Timm created an exciting and challenging course for the racers. Teams from Fernie, Whitewater, Red Mountain, Kimberley, Windermere and as far away as the Yukon attended, approximately 80 kids in all, ages nine to 13. Team Canada member and ski-cross Olympian Danielle Poleschuk was on hand to support the kids and present awards.
The kids took part in multiple races progressing along a ladder system. There were thrills and spills as they raced down the course in groups of four.
Sunday it was over to Emily’s Run (Spruce) for three single slalom races. Weather and conditions were perfect for racing. The music was playing, volunteers were served smokies by barbecue chefs, Shirley Timm and Tom Crockett. A lot of fun was had by all in a fantastic weekend of racing.
