A look back at some of the sports highlights from July and August of 2011.

July

Spanning a distance of 50 km through creeks, over mountains, boulders, snow and skree, the Knee Knacker ultra-marathon is aptly named, and not for the faint of heart.

Terrace’s Susan Moldenhauer knows she is in for a challenge but pulls through, completing the race, which takes place just north of Vancouver, on July 9.

Athletes brave chilly waters, cycle for kilometres and run their hearts out during the sixth annual Barkmen tournament at Furlong Bay on Lakelse Lake.

A former Terrace resident joins the coaching staff of the newly-formed Winnipeg Jets NHL team.

Wade Flaherty accepts the position as head goaltending coach for the team.

It is hot with sunny skies, followed by a rainy downpour, for riders in the BCMA Fall Series at the Terrace Motocross track.

About 50 riders take part in 111 entries throughout the two-day event.

The Terrace Totem Saddle Club hosts its schooling show at the Thornhill Community Grounds, with 16 riders of all age groups participating over a three-day period.

More than 1,500 youths descend on Penticton, Powell River and 100 Mile House for the 2011 minor soccer provincials.

And the Kermodeis are abundant in all three cities, as the Terrace Minor Soccer Association sends eight teams to participate.

It is the Terrace Northmen up against the Prince Rupert Seamen in the North West Senior Men’s Rugby League trophy battle at Northwest Community College. Terrace does not disappoint, winning the match 54 – 14.

August

Two Terrace minor hockey players make it past round one of the Cariboo Cougars selection camp Aug. 5-7.

Kenny Nordstrom and Colten Braid are set to return for another selection camp with the major midget team Sept. 2 in Prince George.

The northwest is well represented at the 2011 BC Seniors Games, as 61 athletes from the zone come home with 40 medals.

Events take place in the three communities of Nelson, Trail and Castlegar. A total of 10 gold, 20 silver

and 10 bronze medals are won by local competitors.

Thompson Rivers University teams up with  life-long volleyball athlete Jason Haldane to host a volleyball clinic in Terrace.

Members of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and former Terrace resident Haldane work together to run the clinics, which take place at Thornhill Junior Secondary school.
