Abbotsford athletes excel at 55+ BC Games

Abbotsford athletes won big at the 55+ BC Games in Coquitlam, which ran from Sept. 20 to 24.

Locals were part of the Fraser Valley zone team, which finished first overall by earning 513 medals.

Individual gold medal winners from Abbotsford included: Mary Ann Dykshoorn (novice women’s 60 to 64 cycling time trial, hill climb and road race), Barbara Hill (novice women’s 65 to 69 cycling time trail, hill climb and road race), George Hara (men’s 65 to 69 tennis), Harnek Toor (men’s 70 to 74 long jump, high jump, hammer throw and weight throw) and Brian Gaudet (men’s singles pickleball).

Winning gold as part of a team were Diamond Girls team members: Susan Giampa, Linda Watson, Maria Fatkin, Anne Berge, Colleen Whytwe and Linda Wischoff (women’s 55+ competitive slo pitch).

Picking up individual silver medals were: Sharon Mitchell (competitive women’s 65 to 69 cycling time trail, road race and hill climb) and Harnek Toor (men’s 70 to 74 discus and javelin).

Locals winning silver on a team included: Carol Waters (men’s and women’s bridge, 751+ master points) and Ethel Beckingham (men’s and women’s cribbage pairs).

Individual bronze winners were: Hema Ambulgekar (women’s golf 60 to 64), Vivian Olson (women’s golf 75 to 79) and Wilfried Braun (men’s 55 to 59 long jump).

Abbotsford athletes winning bronze on a team include: Joanne and Ted Parker (bridge, 0 to 300 master points) and Alan and Jackie Carson (bridge, 301 to 750 master points).

The Games, which run yearly, take place in Vernon in 2017, the Kimberley/Cranbrook area in 2018 and in Kelowna in 2019.
