A pair of local high school rugby teams kept their provincial hopes alive on Monday.
The Robert Bateman Timberwolves and the Abbotsford Secondary Panthers advanced to the Fraser Valley Tier 1 AA Senior boys rugby semi-finals, both with wins at home.
Bateman jumped out to an early lead against Langley’s D.W. Poppy Secondary, and held on for the 26-24 win at Exhibition Park.
The Panthers followed suit, with a 44-21 win over Surrey’s Southridge Secondary at the Abbotsford Secondary turf field.
The teams continued their playoff runs on Thursday, with Abbotsford winning in Chilliwack 28-26. The Timberwolves fell 43-18 against Langley Secondary on Thursday in the semi-final.
The Panthers now move on to the Fraser Valley championship at Rotary Stadium on May 19 at 3:15 p.m. Bateman plays in the third-place game on May 17.
In the Fraser Valley AAA conference, the Yale Lions finished the regular season atop the Pool B standings, with a perfect record of six wins and zero losses. The Lions outscored the opposition 238-41. The Mouat Hawks placed fourth in the pool, posting a record of three wins and three losses.
Yale defeated Terry Fox 62-12 in the Tier 1 semi-finals on Thursday.
With the win, the Lions battle for the Fraser Valley Tier 1 championships against Tweedsmuir and Earl Marriott at Rotary Stadium on May 19 at 4:45 p.m.
