Abbotsford hockey talents selected in WHL Bantam Draft

Two locals, handful of Yale Hockey Academy products chosen in 2020 draft

A pair of Abbotsford hockey talents were selected in the Western Hockey League’s Bantam Draft earlier today (April 22).

Emmitt Finnie, who played last year with the Abbotsford-based Yale Hockey Academy’s Bantam Prep team, was chosen in the fourth round, 82nd overall by the Kamloops Blazers.

Finnie, a centre, collected 26 goals and 36 assists in 30 games with Yale this season. He added eight points in four playoff games.

Also chosen was defenceman Hunter McInnes, who went in the ninth round, 186th overall to the Vancouver Giants.

McInnes spent last season with the Vancouver-based St. George’s Bantam Prep team, collecting 17 points in 26 games. He previously spent the 2018-19 season with Yale.

Other Yale Hockey Academy talents selected included: Tanner Molendyk (first round, fifth overall to the Saskatoon Blades), Zach Benson (first round, 14th overall to the Winnipeg Ice), Matteo Fabrizi (second round, 31st overall to the Red Deer Rebels), Logan Wormald (third round, 45th overall to the Lethbridge Hurricanes), Jordan Keller (third round, 48th overall to Saskatoon), Michael Ryan (third round, 62nd overall to Kamloops), Sawyer Mynio (third round, 63rd overall to the Seattle Thunderbirds), Reggie Newman (fourth round, 72nd overall to the Victoria Royals), Carter Capton (fifth round, 96th overall to the Brandon Wheat Kings), Brady Smith (sixth round, 123rd overall to Lethbridge) and Brady Milburn (ninth round, 181st overall to the Regina Pats).

The WHL suspended its season due to the COVID-19 pandemic back on March 12 and then cancelled the remainder of its regular season on March 18. The playoffs were then cancelled on March 23, and the cancellation of the Memorial Cup followed soon after.
