Yale Lions repeat as senior men's champs, Abby Panthers win senior girls division

For the second straight year, the Yale Lions are on top of the senior boys division at the Abbotsford Police city basketball tournament.

In front of a packed gym at Columbia Bible College, the Lions exploded offensively in the third quarter to pick up the 91-71 win over the Mouat Hawks.

The Hawks had a 38-36 lead at the half, but the Lions threw up 34 points in the third to cruise to the win. Guard Noah Nickel was named player of the game, and the Lions got a big game from Bradley Braich.

Yale beat Abbotsford Christian School on Wednesday, and Rick Hansen on Thursday to advance to the final.

On the senior girls side, the Abbotsford Panthers dominated all tournament long and beat Yale 62-53 in the final on Saturday.

The Panthers started hot, building an 18-9 lead after one quarter, and held a 38-22 lead at the half. Yale got to within eight points in the third, but couldn’t get any closer.

Panthers guard Sienna Lenz was named player of the game, and the team also got significant production from Marin Lenz.

Yale was tops in last year’s senior girls tournament. The Panthers defeated Dasmesh on Wednesday, and MEI on Thursday to reach the final.

Other winners at the event were: W.A. Fraser Falcons (Grade 8 girls), C.G. Howe (Grade 8 boys), Bateman Timberwolves (Grade 9 girls), Yale Lions (Grade 9 boys), Bateman Timberwolves (junior girls) and Mouat Hawks (junior boys).
