Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame seeks nominations

Local HOF looking for members of 2018 class

The Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame is soliciting nominations for its Class of 2018, and the deadline for nominations has been extended.

Individuals can be nominated for the Hall of Fame in the athlete, team, coach/builder or community sport builder categories, and the deadline for submissions is now Dec. 15. Nomination criteria and forms are available at abbysportshalloffame.ca.

Additionally, nominations are sought for the Wall of Fame – a one-year recognition for Abbotsford athletes between the ages of 14 and 25 who had outstanding individual or team performances in the 2017 calendar year. The nomination form is available on the website, and will be accepted until Dec. 31.

The Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame, located on the main floor of the Legacy Sports Centre at Exhibition Park, contains memorabilia displays honouring athletes, teams and builders who have been inducted since 2003.

The 2017 Hall of Fame class included rugby star Bryn Keys and golfer James Lepp, while hockey player Dean Arsene and track athlete Courtney Inman received nods in 2016.

Wall of Fame inductees for 2017 included: Paige Bennett (water polo), Mackenzie Carson (rugby), Karissa Comeau (judo), Isabelle Harris (judo), Jehmrode Kahlon (soccer), Tausani Levale (rugby), Carter Loewen (baseball), Josh Long (rugby), Greg Poirier (track and field), Aaron Postma (track and field), Cade Smith (baseball), Jacob Thiel (rugby) and Josh Thiel (rugby).

Teams honoured on the wall in 2017 were: the Abbotsford Cardinals (U18 baseball), MEI Eagles senior girls volleyball, Robert Bateman Timberwolves Grade 9 girls basketball, W.J. Mouat Hawks 4X400m senior boys relay and the Yale Lions senior boys rugby.
