A talented local foursome is hoping for a clean sweep in the beach volleyball ranks at the BC Summer Games.
MEI students Emma Gamache, Teagen Boughen, Ashley Huberts and Karissa Marazzi are all representing the Fraser Valley Zone at the Games, and they bring with them a ton of experience in the sport – both on the sand and the hardwood.
Gamache and Boughen have partnered together since the U13 level and won the U15 beach volleyball provincials last year. The pair were also key parts of the MEI Eagles Fraser Valley regional junior girls championship back in November.
Huberts and Marazzi play at the U17 level and have also been beach volleyball partners since the U13 level. This past year they came first in U17 beach volleyball provincials and second in U17 beach nationals. The duo also helped the MEI Eagles senior girls team win a AA provincial title back in December, with Huberts named the provincial final tournament’s most valuable player. The pair were also part of a championship team in the U17 indoor club season earlier this year.
All four girls have been training in Coquitlam in advance of the Games.
Abbotsford is also represented in the beach volleyball boys division by the MEI duo of Ethan Bucknam and Aidan Kelly.
The teams hit the sand at Mill Lake Park on July 22 and 23 from 7:15 a.m. to 1 p.m., and close off the competition on July 24 with competition running from 8:15 to 10:50 a.m. The medals ceremony for the event runs from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
The Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games run from July 21 to 24 in Abbotsford, Langley and Harrison Hot Springs.
