Abbotsford athletes dominated at the 13th annual Miri Piri Wrestling Championships, which occurred at the Ag-Rec Building on Saturday.
The event featured hundreds of high school, middle school and elementary-aged wrestlers competing in dozens of different divisions.
The W.J. Mouat Hawks captured the Miri Piri team trophy after the school’s nine athletes collected a total of 56 points. Mouat beat out second place Tamanawis by 22 to earn the top prize. Abbotsford Traditional Secondary School finished fifth overall with 22 points, while Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School finished tied for eighth with 20.
Two of Mouat’s top performers were Charisma and Jade – the Trolland sisters. Both girls finished first in their respective divisions, with Charisma earning top spot in the girls 57 kilograms and Charisma named the best in the girls 70 kg.
Charisma pinned her first opponent in 31 seconds, and then beat her second opponent in 1:17 to finish first. Jade pinned her first opponent in 43 seconds, and then won her final two bouts 10-0 for the first place showing.
Mouat also had a first place finisher in Sachin Sharma, who earned top spot in the senior boys 54 kg. Sharma won his matches 15-3 and then 10-0 during the event.
ATSS student Jasdeep Dhillon took home first in the senior boys 60 kg, with a pair of 10-0 wins and then a 12-2 win in the final match. MEI‘s Jeevanjot also won his division, pinning opponents in 49 seconds and then 1:24 to earn top spot in the senior boys 78 kg.
Other locals with podium finishes in the senior boys competition included: ATSS student Juvraj Lidder (second, 63 kg), ATSS’s Gagan Grewal (second, 60 kg), Rick Hansen Secondary‘s Chandandeep Pandher (third, 63 kg), MEI’s Savitoj Gill (third, 115 kg), Hansen’s Anmoljit Lidder (fifth, 70 kg), Mouat’s Arshdeep Marar (sixth, 60 kg) and Hansen’s Brayden Dodd (sixth, 70 kg).
Abbotsford grapplers also excelled in the junior boys competition, with first place finishes going to Mouat’s Jagvir Grewal (45 kg), Mouat’s Omral Dhadda (63 kg) and Mouat’s Jorawar Dhinsa (85 kg). Second place finishers included: Mouat’s Taran Bhatti (63 kg), Hansen’s Paramveer Dhillon (85 kg) and Abbotsford Traditional Middle School‘s Arman Lidder (95 kg). ATMS student Arman Dhaliwal placed third in the 51 kg competition.
Schoolboy (elementary) first place finishers were: Howe’s Tejvir Dhinsa (56 kg), Howe’s Laken Trolland (32 kg) and ATMS’s Michjeet Grewal (49 kg).
