Yale Secondary student set to join University of Alberta women's basketball program

Abbotsford’s Jayden White has officially signed with the University of Alberta Pandas women’s basketball program.

The Grade 12 Yale Secondary student revealed the news on social media on Sunday.

“It’s been a long road to get here and I don’t think I could have chosen a better university,” she stated on her Instagram account. “I can’t wait to get to start playing with such a nice and welcoming team.”

White helped lead the Yale Lions to a bronze medal at the 2020 4A senior girls basketball provincials and had offers from schools all across Canada and the United States. Her family said education was also a big factor in the decision, and White will be majoring in education and minoring in American sign language at the Edmonton-based school.

The 6-2 post player averaged 9.3 points 15.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.6 blocks per game during her Grade 11 year with the Lions.

The Pandas finished with a record of 16-4 in the 2019-20 Canada West regular season, and eventually went on to advance to the conference final where they lost 62-51 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. They did qualify for the U Sports final eight tournament, but lost both games at that event.

Her older sister Brooklyn White also competes in the Canada West, and is scheduled to return to the floor with the University of Victoria Vikes in the fall.

White is the second Yale senior girls basketball talent to commit to a Canada West team this month, as her teammate Julie Dueck signed with the MacEwan Griffins on Feb. 17. Yale’s Karishma Rai also will be competing in the Canada West this fall, as she signed with the TRU Wolfpack back in December.

Other recent Yale senior girls basketball talents to sign with Canada West squads include: Kyleigh Boldt (UFV, 2020), Neelam Rai (UBCO, 2020), Brooke White (UVic, 2019) and Tana Pankratz (UVic, 2019).
