Abbotsford’s Julie Dueck is taking her talents to Edmonton in the fall.
The Grade 12 Yale Secondary student made it official on Feb. 17, signing with the MacEwan Griffins women’s basketball team.
Dueck helped lead the Yale Lions to a bronze medal finish at the 2020 B.C. 4A senior girls provincial tournament, and Griffins head coach Katherine Adams said she was impressed by what she’s seen of the 5-8 guard.

“One of the biggest things that first drew me to her was that in her video she included defensive clips,” Adams told the Griffins website. “I noticed in every game she was guarding the best player on the other team. So it shows she can defend and that coaches have trusted her to guard the best player.
She’s just a workhorse, really willing to get after it defensively. Knowing that is something we pride ourselves on, I think she fits well with who we are as Griffins.”
Dueck will enter the Alberta school’s science program and arrives to the school with an impressive 4.0 GPA.
“I think overall in terms of the whole package, she’s a good basketball player, good person, and really buys into the team aspect – she wants to be part of something bigger and contribute to the greater cause,” said Adams.
When you look at her character and what she wants out of the experience and what we have to offer, I think she’s going to be a great fit with our culture, the girls we have in the program and the direction we’re going.”
The Griffins missed the playoffs and finished with a record of 2-18 in the 2019-20 Canada West season.
Dueck is the second 2020-21 Yale senior girls basketball player to sign with a post-secondary team, as her teammate Karishma Rai signed with the TRU Wolfpack back in December.
