Abbotsford’s Kaitlyn Meier has signed with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds women’s rugby program.
The Yale Secondary Grade 12 student made it official on Saturday (March 20) as the announcement was made on Instagram.
Meier is a 5-2 scrum half and will join the UBC club in the fall.
“It has been a dream of mine to play rugby for one of the top universities for as long as I can remember and UBC has an amazing kinesiology program,” Meier told The News. “I’m ecstatic about joining a very welcoming and supportive team and I can’t wait to play rugby with my sister.”
Meier’s sister Emily Meier, also a Yale grad, is currently in her second year of eligibility with UBC.
Kaitlyn played on several local rugby teams growing up, including the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club’s junior women’s team, the Yale Lions and the Fraser Valley Rugby Union.
She also represented Team BC at the U16 Western Championships in 2019. That team finished first at the Kelowna event beating out teams from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
She joins a UBC club that took home a Canada West championship in the last year of competition in 2019. For more on the team, visit gothunderbirds.ca/sports/womens-rugby.
