Youth golfers got the chance to hit the links at Abbotsford’s Ledgeview Golf and Country Club earlier this summer thanks to a grant from the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games Legacy Fund.
In total, 36 spots were made available to Archway Community Services over two Saturday sessions. Participants received 1.5 hours of instruction from golf pro Luke Bogdan, lunch and a goodie bag. Two lucky youth will also receive a set of new golf clubs and a junior golf membership.
Ledgeview director of golf Gerry Hadwin contacted ACS to offer the workshop to kids and youth connected to local programming.
“We are pleased to have partnered with Archway to offer young people in Abbotsford the opportunity to be introduced to the sport of golf, that they may not of otherwise experienced,” Hadwin said in a press release. “We were also excited to have received a grant from the BC Summer Games to afford us to put on such a great program.”
Back in 2016, Ledgeview hosted golf competition during the Games. Past president Steve Carlton said it’s nice to see local athletes benefit from the Games.
“‘We are delighted to designate the grant to support the junior golf program at Ledgeview knowing that youth in our community are being served,” he said. “Thanks to everyone for putting this together. It’s great for our sporting community.”
“The invitation to partner with Ledgeview on this event came at a great time. Many of programs were challenged to find safe and affordable outdoor activities to engage clients, and our Archway families” stated Janis Mitchell, Philanthropy Department Specialist at Archway. “We have had such positive feedback from our participants and parents– one youth client was able to overcome their barrier of social anxiety. They were so proud of themselves for using their skills to overcome their fear to find out they love golf.”
