Abigail Rigsby earns full ride golf scholarship to Oklahoma Christian University

Abigail Rigsby of Courtenay, who won the 2015 BC Girls Juvenile championship, has signed an NCAA letter of intent to play college golf at Oklahoma Christian University (OCU) in Edmond, Oklahoma, just outside of Oklahoma City.

Rigsby had an excellent tournament season, finishing in the Top 20 at the BC Ladies Amateur, BC Junior Girls and Canadian Junior Girls tournaments prior to her win at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club in August. She shot a course-record 6-under-par 65 in the final round to post a three-shot win.

OCU Lady Eagles coach Greg Lynn says, “Abi is a very talented young lady. She has the potential to be as good as anyone we have ever signed. She’s very disciplined with goals that I believe she will accomplish.”

Rigsby, who was awarded a full ride scholarship to OCU, spent days touring the campus and golf facilities in early September.

“It was a fantastic visit and a great opportunity to meet the coach and future teammates,” she said. “The girls on the team were great and very welcoming. They made me feel at home, as did coach Lynn.

“I had some excellent offers from other universities across the United States and a couple from Canadian universities, but OCU was the best fit for me. I can’t wait to get there. It will be an awesome challenge and the courses I’ve seen so far are just phenomenal in Oklahoma.”

Rigsby heads to Oklahoma next August, but not before she competes in the 2016 BC Ladies and Junior Girls tournaments and the Canadian Junior Girls Championship next August in Nova Scotia.

In its fifth season of competition – and its first as a full NCAA Division II member – OCU already has forged  a strong tradition in women’s golf. The Lady Eagles won three events last spring, including taking the unofficial team title in the Heartland Conference Championship. The Lady Eagles were 39th in Division II in the Golfstat.com Relative Ranking after the fall 2015 season – one of five Heartland teams in the top 40.
