When members of the 893 Beaufort Squadron took on cadets from across the province in a biathlon competition at Mt. Washington recently, one of them was able to bring home some hardware.
Corporal Travis De Rooy took a bronze medal at the event, an accomplishment all the more remarkable because of the calibre of the competition, said Padre Brian Kirby.
“They were competing against people who live in Whistler,” he said.
“Our cadets travel to Mt. Washington to practice, but at the same time, it’s not like you lived right there.”
The third place finish capped a strong showing from the local cadets that started on Jan. 9, when nine of them participated in the Zone competition and five of them were selected to participate in the Provincials on Feb. 5.
In that first contest, Flight Sergeant Bradley Sherlaw took the gold medal in the Senior Male category, followed by Flight Corporal Daniel Steeves in second and Sgt. Justin De Rooy placed fourth.
Flight Sergeant Kieran Lohrmann took sixth overall.
In the Junior Male category, Corporal Travis De Rooy took the gold and Matthew Sherlaw took the silver. Corporal Knute Ellingson took 10th spot, while Air Cadet Adam Penley finished 12th.
In the Youth male category, Warrant Officer Skyler Webber took fourth place.
Five of the cadets, Skyler Webber, Bradley Sherlaw, Travis De Rooy, were selected to compete in the Provincial competition.
“All of these Air Cadets deserve recognition for the many hours they spent in training and then competing at both the Zone and Provincial Competition,” Kirby said.
