Alberni Valley Bulldogs battle against top teams in the BCHL

Bulldogs split weekend games against Spruce Kings, Chiefs

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs took on the top two teams in the BCHL this weekend, winning one and losing one on home ice.

More than 1,300 Bulldogs fans watched a battle between the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Prince George Spruce Kings on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The Spruce Kings opened scoring early in the first period, but Bulldogs defenceman Darren Rizzolo scored the lone goal in the second period on the powerplay to tie things up, assisted by Mitch Deelstra and Jackson Doucet. However, the Spruce Kings scored the game winner on the powerplay late in the third and took the game 2-1.

The Bulldogs squared off against BCHL leaders the Chilliwack Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, taking the game 4-1 and ending a winning streak for the Chiefs.

Although the Chiefs struck first, with a power play goal in the second period, the Bulldogs tied things up with a power play goal of their own by forward Ryan Miotto. Third period goals by Mitch Deelstra, Keaton Mastrodonato and Grayson Valente sealed the game for the home squad. Bulldogs goaltender John Hawthorne came up strong, making 40 saves for the home team.

Next up, the Bulldogs will face Island rivals the Victoria Grizzlies at Weyerhaeuser Arena on Friday, Nov. 23. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.

ICE CHIPS…The Bulldogs have moved their Friday, Dec. 28 game against the Nanaimo Clippers to Monday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. This will allow players more time off for the Christmas Break to spend with their families.
