Wayne Nelson dropped the puck for the Aldergrove Peewee C2 and Penticton’s team at the Coleton Nelson Memorial Hockey Tournament on Saturday at Aldergrove Arena.
Wayne and his wife Brenda have been helping the Aldergrove Minor Hockey Association host the tournament every year in memory of the couple’s late son Coleton, who was killed in a motor vehicle crash on Feb. 18, 2011 at the age of 12.
Colton had been an enthusiastic member of the AMHA from an early age.
Coleton’s parents have been raising funds every year in his memory to help provide gifts and Christmas hampers for families in the community who need the extra help at this time of year. The public is encouraged to “help fill the net” with donations of non-perishable food items at the tournament, which is being held at both Aldergrove and Langley Sportsplex arenas.
Together with a fundraiser the Nelsons hosted in the summer, which raised $10,000, the fund will buy food hampers and gifts for 17 families in the community this Christmas.
The annual memorial Atom and Peewee hockey tournament hosted by Aldergrove Minor Hockey Association got underway Thursday, Nov. 9.
The games run Thursday through Monday, with the final gold, silver and bronze games on Monday afternoon at 2:15 and 3:45 p.m. at Aldergrove arena.
The competition features 24 teams from across B.C., with five teams from Aldergrove.
This year the event is also in memory of the Nelson family’s grandson Ryker, who passed away at the age of 19 months on Feb. 18, 2016.
