Sixty-one athletes put on a show of talent at the 16th annual Lizard Range/Fernie Tourney disc golf tournament, last weekend.
It was the youngster, 18-year-old Kevin Sheehan from Missoula, Montana who took top spot with a total score of 97 points (-13) after two rounds (36 holes) of golf. He took the victory two points ahead of Brian Bjortomt from Missoula, MT, and Calgary’s Bogdan Szafranowicz who finished with scores of 99 each.
Although the turnout was slightly lower than last year, organizer Serge Gosselin said the tournament went great.
Szafranowicz, the defending pro winner from last year, returned with the hope of defending his title but this was taken by the young professional, Sheehan, who has been making a name for himself in the world of disc golf. Sheehan entered the tournament as the highest ranked player out of the group.
Fernie’s Greg Gomola took top spot in the advanced over 40 division. He made a name for himself after shooting the second best score of the day, seven under par, in his second round.
Gosselin was excited to see players come from all over for the PDGA-certified event.
“We had four people from Washington, seven from Montana, a bunch from B.C. and Alberta, and three from Fort St. John. Three junior girls under fourteen years old,” he said.
“It was our best junior season actually, we had seven juniors. Two fourteen-year-olds and everyone else was between nine and 12 years old.”
Thunderstorms threatened the course all weekend and despite a few showers here and there, the weather held off for the most part and the games went on without a hitch.
Fernie’s disc golf course is located in James White Park and is available to use free of charge.
