Glen Martin didn’t have much to say after Cowichan LMG’s uneventful 2-0 win over the V.I. Wave last Saturday.
“The main thing is we’re still in first place [in Div. 1 of the Vancouver Island Soccer League] and we still have a game in hand,” the Cowichan coach said.
The game was tied 0-0 at the half, but Paddy Nelson scored in the 62nd and 74th minutes to put it away for Cowichan. Nelson’s first goal was a header to finish off a cross from defender Brad Archibald.
Martin wasn’t blown away with his team’s performance.
“We weren’t really worried [when it was scoreless at halftime], but it was a really slow-paced game,” he said. “I wasn’t happy with how we were playing. We played down to their level a little bit.”
The game was played on the big, worn-out Finlayson turf field, which is “not conducive to good soccer,” made worse by windy conditions. Cowichan just had to grind it out.
“We weren’t creating a lot of chances, but we weren’t in danger of being scored on,” Martin said. “It felt like one goal would be enough to win it.”
Nelson’s goals were his league-leading 16th and 17th of the season.
Cowichan is scheduled to play Comox at 6 p.m. on the Sherman Road turf, but it will depend on the weather.
