Anticipation builds for Tomahawks tryouts

Excitement is building for the beginning of a new hockey season and for the start of a new hockey team in Lac la Hache.

Eva Navrot, secretary/treasurer for the newly formed Lac la Hache Tomahawks senior AA club, says interest is high as far as prospective players go and she is expecting close to 60 to show up for tryouts.

They take place on Sept. 17, 18 and 24, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac la Hache, and the cost is $35.

With 16 First Nations bands in the area, Navrot says she is expecting a majority of participants from that talent pool.

“It’s not strictly for First Nations people, though. Anyone over the age of 19 is eligible to play.”

The team coach is Al Navrot, a former Williams Lake Stampeders coach, and the assistant coach is Wally Arcand. The club is still looking for a general manager.

Eva says team jersey sponsorship sales have been going well. A total of 25 are being sold for $200 each and purchasers will get their name on a jersey for the life of the shirt.

Season tickets are also being sold for $80 each, and are good for nine home games.

The Tomahawks will play in the Central Interior Hockey League during the 2011/12 season.
