APD city tournament tipping off

Basketball teams from all across the city battling it out

The W.J. Mouat Hawks and Rick Hansen Hurricanes senior boys basketball teams faced stiff competition at the 2018 Tsumura Basketball Invitational, which ran from Thursday to Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

The event annually welcomes 16 of the top senior boys teams from all over the province, but both Abbotsford clubs lost on day one of the event to move to the consolation bracket for the remainder of the tournament.

The Hawks fell 92-70 to the Terry Fox Ravens, while Hansen dropped a 94-80 decision to the Holy Cross Crusaders.

Friday’s day two saw the Hurricanes take down R.A. McMath 93-83, while the Hawks were edged 90-89 by Sir Charles Tupper. The final day of action on Saturday featured the Hurricanes losing 88-51 in the 11th place game, and the Hawks defeating the Belmont Bulldogs 86-76 in the 13th place game.

Surrey’s Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers beat Burnaby South 82-77 in the tournament final.

The Hawks and Hurricanes then open the Abbotsford Police City Basketball tournament today (Wednesday), with games at St. John Brebeuf until Friday. Also competing in the senior boys division are the Bateman Timberwolves, the St. John Brebeuf Bears, the Abbotsford Panthers, MEI Eagles, ACS Knights, ATSS Titans and the Yale Lions. Senior boys action starts at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and then 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

The senior girls competition features Yale, ATSS, SJB, Mouat, Bateman, Hansen, MEI and ACS. Abbotsford Senior hosts the first three days of senior girls action, with games starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Yale Secondary hosts the junior boys opening rounds, with ATSS, SJB, Yale, Bateman, Abbotsford Senior, ACS, MEI, Mouat and Hansen battling it out.

Games open at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Junior girls action sees Yale, SJB, Mouat, Bateman, Abby Senior, ACS, MEI and Hansen squaring off. Hansen hosts the first three days of action from Wednesday to Friday, with games tipping off each day at 3 p.m.

Grade 9 boys action, hosted by Bateman, features Hansen, Dasmesh, Mouat, Bateman, Abby Senior, ATSS, Yale and MEI tipping off at 3 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday.

The Grade 9 girls tournament welcomes Hansen, Mouat, Bateman and ATSS battling it out. Mouat hosts the games, which open at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, take a break on Thursday and then resume at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Grade 8 boys action, occurring at MEI, sees Reimer, Fraser, ATMS, SJB, ACS, CDG, Clayburn, Dasmesh, Abby Middle, C.G. Howe and MEI competing. Games open at 3 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday.

Grade 8 girls competition, hosted by ACS, features Clayburn, CDG, ACS, ATMS, Reimer, SJB, MEI, Dasmesh, Abby Middle, Fraser and Howe. Games open at 3 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday.

The event concludes with Championship Saturday, with title games in every division running at Columbia Bible College starting at 9 a.m.
