Jonah Johnson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Oceanside atom development hockey team beat Sooke 4-1 Sunday to claim the bronze medal in the Fall Face-off tournament at Oceanside Place Arena.
Benjamin Groome had a goal and an assist and Declan Erler added a score for the atom Generals.
Damien Roberts, who played in goal all four games for Oceanside, carried a shutout into the final two minutes before Sooke scored with 1:28 to play to provide the final margin.
Oceanside 6, Victoria 4
Groome and Cole Campbell scored two goals each as the atoms jumped off to a fast start and held on for the win in the opening game of pool play Saturday.
Johnson and Kurt Beaton also tallied as the Generals ran out to a 3-1 lead in the opening period and extended it to 5-2 midway through the third. After Victoria scored back-to-back goal in the final 10 minutes to close to 5-4, Groome added an insurance score at 14:40.
Oceanside 7, TriPort 6
Campbell and Groome both scored in the final two and a half minutes of regulation in a wild rally Saturday.
The Eagles of North Vancouver Island had gone ahead 6-5 when Jack Barrett completed a natural hat trick with 2:51 left to play. But just 20 seconds later Campbell scored the equalizer, and Groome delivered the game-winner with 1:52 left. Campbell, Groome and Kurt Beaton each scored two goals and Ty Boulton had one.
Whistler 12, Oceanside 0
The hosts were unable to dent the defence of the eventual champions, who went on to claim the tourney title with a 9-8 shootout win over the Vancouver Thunderbirds in Sunday’s finals.
TriPort claimed fifth place with a win over Comox, and Nanaimo prevailed over Victoria in the 7th-8th place contest.
