The Nanaimo Golf Club is hosting B.C. Golf’s men’s and women’s mid-amateur and mid-master championships Tuesday (May 31) through Thursday. The event is four provincial championships in one.

“The quality of play will be quite high, you can guarantee that,” said Bryan Outram, communications manager for B.C. Golf. “Any of the provincial championships are about as good a quality, amateur-wise, as you are going to get. B.C., traditionally, produces some of the best-quality amateurs in the entire country.”

All four 2015 champions will be defending their titles, including mid-amateur champions Christina Proteau of Port Alberni and Jordan Belton of Surrey and mid-masters champs Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay and Lance Lundy of Pemberton.

The women’s field also includes Nanaimo’s Kim Evans, Alberni’s Jackie Little and Victoria’s Alison Murdoch. The men’s field includes Nanaimo’s Sandy Harper, Courtenay’s Greg Koster and Victoria’s Kevin Carrigan.

Outram said winning at the Nanaimo Golf Club will require keeping the ball in play and putting well, not necessarily “bombing it 300 yards, although some of these [golfers] can…

“Really, what you need to do with a course like Nanaimo is to be able to manage the game. You have to understand there are a lot of subtleties there.”

Tuesday’s tee times range from 7 a.m.-12:25 p.m. for the men and 10-10:45 a.m. for the women.
