The Wednesday Afternoon Women’s Badminton group is recruiting more ladies to come out and enjoy playing the sport every week.
The badminton activity, organized by a group of tennis players who wanted something to do over the winter, has been playing for many years now. They started at the old Community Hall in the Parksville Community Park but when the building was demolished they moved to the Parksville Community Centre. Now they play at the Arrowsmith Activity Centre in Coombs Fairgrounds at 1014 Ford Rd.
But some members, according to Jane Nielsen, are no longer able to play. They are now inviting more ladies to come out and join them to keep badminton as a viable activity.
“We play every Wednesday afternoon… yes, one of the few daytime badminton times for women only,” said Nielsen. “This is a great facility for badminton with a special sport floor and three courts to play on.”
To encourage new players, the group will be holding a free session to introduce women to the sport of badminton. It will take place on Jan. 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you don’t have a racquet, the group will supply them and the birdies as well.
If you are just getting back into badminton or new at it and want to give it a try, said Nielsen, who added that you can meet the women and get a little exercise.
All ages and skill levels are welcome.
Those who cannot make the January session are welcome to drop in any Wednesday afternoon, and the group will provide newcomers a free trial session.
The group regularly plays from 1-3 p.m. at the Arrowsmith Activity Centre every Wednesday. The drop in fee is $5.
