Bantam Bulldogs keep on winning

Huge victory for Cowichan junior bantams over Nanaimo

Strong defence and an efficient, diverse offence were the keys as the bantam Cowichan Bulldogs extended their perfect season to six games with a 55-0 win over the Chilliwack Giants last Sunday.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the first quarter against the big Chilliwack linemen, but gradually gained the upper hand.

Several injured Cowichan players returned to action, including quarterback Finn Shea, who threw touchdown passes to Jesse Kwasny, Nico Harris and Jayden Strzok. Strzok also ran for two touchdowns, while Stirling Henry and Dillon Wilson ran for one each, and Harris returned an interception to score.

“The athletes are continuing to develop and gain momentum,” Cowichan bantam coach PJ Shea said. “Every week they are committing to getting better, and it’s showing in their performances on game days.”

The bantam Bulldogs will visit the Ladysmith Steelers at Forrest Field this Sunday at 4 p.m.

Max Lang returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, setting the stage for the junior bantam Bulldogs’ 57-0 win over the Nanaimo Lions at McAdam Park on Sunday. Brad MacRae scored on Cowichan’s next offensive play, then after that touchdown was called back on a penalty, Ryder Maertz made good on the next opportunity for the first of his two majors on the day.

“I knew after this that we would have a great game,” Cowichan head coach Opie Williams said.

Lang and Jordan Buscaino each had two touchdowns, Cody Williams had one, and Conner Harper ran in one of his two interceptions for a pick-six.

The JB ‘Dogs are in Ladysmith this Saturday to play the Steelers under the Forrest Field lights at 7 p.m.

The peewee Bulldogs struggled in a 28-0 loss to the Nanaimo Bombers at McAdam Park on Sunday.

“It was a disappointing day for our team,” coach Trystan Ryder said. “Fumbles, missed blocks and tackles led to a lopsided victory for Nanaimo. We feel we can be a much better team than our record shows.”

The peewees will also visit Ladysmith on Saturday at 5 p.m.
