Bantam Grizzlies finish fourth at provincials

The Revelstoke Bantam Grizzlies hockey team finished fourth at the Tier 3 provincial championships in Smithers, B.C., this week.

“There was a lot of close games and we just got the short end of them,” said team manager Jacquie Federico as the team was on the way back from Smithers on Thursday.

Revelstoke opened the tournament on Sunday with a dominating 9-3 win over Tri-Port. On Monday, the Grizzlies played twice, defeating Whistler 8-4 in the morning and tying Whitehorse 3-3 in the evening.

On Sunday, in a battle for first place in the division, Revelstoke lost 7-3 to eventual champions Terrace. Still, the team qualified for the semi-finals against division A winners Quesnel.

Revelstoke faced Quesnel Wednesday evening. They started off strong, taking a 2-0 lead at the end of the second. However, Quesnel battled back hard, tying the game and then winning it 3-2 in sudden death overtime. Revelstoke fired 47 shots on net but couldn’t capitalize on it’s many chances.

In the consolation final Thursday morning Revelstoke fell 4-3 to Nelson in another hard fought game. The teams traded goals until Nelson went up 4-3 at 6:16 of the third period. Revelstoke pressed hard to tie the game but could not find the back of the net, settling for fourth place.

In the main final, Terrace continued their dominance, defeating Quesnel 9-2.
