Bantams end Grizzlies’ run

The Ironside Contracting Bantam B Tyees played out their final game and had a chance to play spoiler. The Kerry Park Islanders came in with a record of 1-1-1 and could tie for second in the Tier III round robin playoffs with a win. The only thing holding them back was a hungry and healthy (mostly) Campbell River Tyees team looking to end their year with a win. With friends, family and injured teammates watching, the Tyees took to the ice Sunday with something to prove. Kerry Park got onto the board fast, scoring just 24 seconds into the game. But Tyee Gage Crawford, set up by Ethan Fox, pulled the Tyees even on an early power play goal. Kerry Park had an answer, well two answers, scoring at 2:02 and again at 1:35 late in the first period. Tyee Ben Manson got Campbell River within one after he jumped on a rebound, and buried a back-handed shot before the first came to a close. The second frame heavily favoured the Tyees. Campbell River’s Travis Goodwin tied the game up at three, then Crawford scored just after the power play ended from Jake McKenzie and Goodwin. The Tyees had found their stride and were loaded with confidence, you could see it in their skating and could see their smiles from the stands. Goodwin scored two more goals in the second, first on the power play from Crawford and Fox, then again four-on-four from Cole Morgan and McKenzie. Campbell River finished up 40 minutes of play with a 6-3 lead and tons of momentum on their side. Goodwin continued to score at will, netting his fourth goal on the power play, from Morgan and McKenzie, putting Kerry Park behind by four goals. The Islanders did manage to get a little closer with two goals of their own but that was as close as it got. The game had to be called with about two minutes left to play due to time restraints, there were a few delays from players taking a couple of penalties. The team would like to thank the community for all its support, the coaches for all the time, guidance and commitment, their parents for giving up their money, weekends, money and travel. Thank you all for a fun-filled year and good luck to both peewee teams in their next round of the playoffs.
