Barrel racers from across the Cariboo were treated to some excellent weather for the first race of the Quesnel Fall Spring Series on Sunday (Oct. 6) at Alex Fraser Park.
The riders and their horses were able to make use of the outdoor arena for one of the last days of the season, and they took advantage of it, pushing each other for some great times.
About 40 competitors took part in the event, which had Open, Youth, Senior and PeeWee race categories.
Race producer Jodi Staves was pleased with the conditions.
“They’re amazing,” she said. “Alex Fraser Park has really taken care of the ground here.”
For her part, Staves organizes the entries, books the arena, makes sure there are enough volunteers, and on Sunday, she even drove the quad to rake the grounds in between runs.
This year, she and her team are hoping to put on between 15 and 20 races before summer comes along.
While they will be hosting many of those events indoors, they are hoping to get at least one more race in at the outdoor arena.
“If Oct. 20 has good weather, we’ll have it outside,” she says.
“It’s going to be a costume Halloween barrel race, so it’ll be lots of fun.”
