Barsby clinches first in conference

NANAIMO – John Barsby Secondary School’s AA varsity ’Dawgs won 21-0 over the Carson Graham Eagles on Friday at Merle Logan Field.

There’s still some football to be played this fall, but the Barsby Bulldogs have already achieved one of their goals.

John Barsby Secondary School’s AA varsity ’Dawgs clinched first place in the Western Conference with a 21-0 win over the Carson Graham Eagles on Friday at Merle Logan Field.

Both teams went into the matchup with undefeated records but the Bulldogs were the ones who were able to tough out a win on their home turf.

Coach Rob Stevenson said in a press release that his team’s defence gave a great effort.

“We were quite frankly smothering and again, very, very physical,” he said.

Offensively, Brandon Parker was the central figure with 40 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

Kyle Vollet added 16 carries for 103 yards and scored Barsby’s other touchdown on a 44-yard interception return.

Duc Truong had an interception and a fumble recovery and Shawn Arabsky and Cole Virtanen made six tackles apiece.

First place has Stevenson feeling pride.

“[I] am thankful to be a part of this program, school culture and community,” he said.

GAME ON … Barsby’s final regular-season game is the Kocher Classic against the Nanaimo District Islanders on Friday (Nov. 1) at 1:45 p.m. at Merle Logan Field.
