Fruitvale’s Ella Matteucci picked up the win and was named game MVP in Team B.C.’s first match of Baseball Canada’s Senior Women’s Invitational Championship tournament this week in Spruce Grove, Alta.
Matteucci got the start on the mound for Team B.C. as it faced a tough Ontario side in its first game Wednesday. But the former J. L. Crowe student pitched brilliantly, leading Team B.C. to a 6-4 victory.
Matteucci completed five strong innings, and left the game with a 5-2 lead. She also helped her cause with the bat, going 2-for-3 at the dish, while knocking in three runs and swiping two bases, to earn Most Valuable Player of the game honours.
Matteucci was named to Team B.C. last month after tryouts on the mainland in May. The tournament hosts teams from Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Team West – a junior squad comprised of players 16-19 years old.
Team B.C. played Team West yesterday but scores were unavailable at press time. They take on Alberta today at noon and Quebec at 6 p.m.
Playoffs go on Saturday.
