North Langley bantam Bears' Joseph Brake goes airborne against the Abbotsford Falcons.

Bears split in opening week

The North Langley Bears went 2-2 in week one of the Valley Community Football League.

In bantam action, the Abbotsford Falcons pulled to within two points, but their subsequent two-point conversion attempt was stopped and the North Langley Bears pulled out a 14-12 victory.

Quarterback Braeden Pritchard connected with Adrian Clements for a 20-yard pass, which put the ball on the one-yard line and then Pritchard ran the ball into the end zone himself two plays later for the touchdown.

The team’s second major came from Won-Jae Boo, also from one-yard out.

Cameron Sparkes added a pair of converts on the touchdowns.

The defence was led by Alec Robertson, who had a couple of quarterback sacks and other tackles for losses.

Evan Wakeham, Jason Sharp, Damon Vassos, Tyler Aasen, Michael Chan, Boo, Clements and Sparkes also contributed in limiting the Falcons offence.

Chan also had a fumble recovery, while Boo and Clements both had interceptions.

• The peewee Bears posted an 18-0 shutout over Chilliwack Red.

Alexander Henderson, Ryan Taylor and Ethan Adkins had the touchdowns, while Andrew Canning’s booming kickoffs helped the Bears win the field position battle.

• North Langley’s peewee team lost a shootout, falling 49-31 to Chilliwack Red.

Quarterback Darian Pritchard and receiver Max Joseph combined on several big passing plays, including a 70-yard catch and run which went for a score.

• The atom Bears fell 14-6 against the Chilliwack Giants.

Marcus Stang scored the team’s lone touchdown after he was sprung free by the block of Nick Tanner.

Aiden Holloway and Jaxon Stebbings had solid games running the ball, while Nicholas Romero led the defence.
